BACKGROUND
CELPAD was formerly known as the Centre for Languages (CfL). It was established in July 1983, together with the Centre for Fundamental Knowledge, the Kulliyyah of Economics, and the Kulliyyah of Laws.In May 1993, CfL was renamed the Centre for Languages and Pre-University Academic Development (CELPAD) to align with the Philosophy, Vision, and Mission of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and to take on the responsibility of introducing a new system for language teaching and learning at the University.
CELPAD offers courses in English, Arabic, and Bahasa Melayu, as well as Tilawah al-Quran, to both undergraduateand postgraduate students at all levels of proficiency. Its team of well-trained and qualified academic staff employs modern multimedia language laboratories, up-to-date teaching materials, and effective methodologies to ensure high-quality language learning. CELPAD plays a critical role in ensuring that all IIUM students fulfill the minimum language proficiency requirementsnecessary to undertake credit-bearing Kulliyyah courses in English and Arabic. In addition, Bahasa Melayu, Tilawah, and Mandarin courses are also offered, either as university-required or elective subjects.
