Department of Legal Studies

The Department of Legal Studies is the academic department that offers the Foundation in Law Programme at CFS IIUM, Gambang Camous. The program is uniquely designed to set a strong foundation to students’ understanding of both legal knowledge; civil and Shariah as well as basic legal skills for them to pursue a degree in law. Upon successful completion of this course, students can choose to pursue their Bachelor or Laws (LLB) or Bachelor of Laws (Syariah) (LLBS) at the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL). Manned by qualified and experienced academics coming from various legal backgrounds, the Department of Legal Studies, CFS IIUM has become one of the leading centres in offering quality law foundation programme in Malaysia.

Course Synopsis

» SSHF 0114 (INTRODUCTION TO LAW)
This course is a common core course for the Social Science and Humanities module. It provides introductory knowledge of law including functions, classification, sources as well as its operation and related institutions. It also discusses the relation between law and selected concepts such as morality, human rights, government and society.

» LAWF 0124 (INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC LAW)
This course is a niche course for all law students. It provides an overview and introductory knowledge of Islamic law. It covers the meaning of relevant terms, characteristics, objectives, as well as the sources of Islamic law. The course also outlines the historical development of Islamic law from the Pre-Islamic Period (JÉhiliyyah) until the Era of Uthmaniyyah.

» LAWF 0134 (INTRODUCTION TO LEGAL SKILLS) This course provides students with the necessary legal skills to enable them to conduct basic legal research. It includes skills to find and comprehend the primary and secondary legal sources. The course also exposes students to basic skills in finding and reading legal materials, skills to deliver sound arguments and problem-solving skills.

» LAWF 0144 (INTRODUCTION TO CONTRACT AND TORT LAW)
This course is a niche course for all law students. It provides an introductory knowledge of contract and tort law. It covers the elements to form a valid contract and the remedies available for a breach of contract. The course also briefly introduces students to the fundamentals of tortious liability and the general defences applicable in the law of tort.

» LAWF 0154 (LEGAL WRITING)
This course is a niche course for all law students. It aims to equip students with the basic skills in academic writing for the purpose of legal studies as well as promoting ethics related to it. This course introduces the basic features and techniques in writing law essays, case brief and case review as well as constructing sound arguments for the purpose of writing simple legal opinions. Besides that, it also exposes the various methods of citing references, documentation styles as well as responsible use of various writing tools.
