The Department of Physics at the Centre for Foundation Studies is committed in delivering a solid groundwork in physics, preparing students for undergraduate studies in engineering, physical and biological sciences as well as health and medical fields in the main campuses.

The Department of Physics at Centre for Foundation Studies, IIUM was established in June 2010 and under the purview of Office of the Deputy Dean Academic and Internationalisation (ODDAI). The department offers physics subjects at the fundamental level comprising of mechanics, thermodynamics, vibration and waves, electricity, magnetism, light and optics. Specifically for Foundation in Engineering students, a subject named Introduction to Engineering was tailored to provide exposure to the engineering profession and basic programming.

We emphasize conceptual understanding, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities through a well-structured curriculum and hands-on laboratory experiments. This includes lectures, tutorials, projects, e-learning and practical experiments. Our department also integrates modern teaching methods and educational technologies to enhance student engagement and achievement.

Department of Physics is responsible in monitoring students from Foundation in Engineering programme in terms of academic advising and co-curricular activities. Our dedicated academic members bring a wealth of academic expertise and a passion for teaching, fostering a dynamic and supportive learning environment.  Through continuous innovation and academic excellence, the Department of Physics plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of scientists and engineers in line with the IIUM mission and vision.

OBJECTIVES
  1. To prepare the candidates for admission into the undergraduate studies at the kuliyyahs in the IIUM Gombak and Kuantan campuses.
  2. To provide the candidates with physics knowledge and skills which are required in sciences and engineering field.
  3. To monitor the academic performance and activities of the students in the Foundation in Engineering programme.

PHYSICS 1 (PHCF 0215)

This course provides exposure to the foundation of physics under the mechanics and waves themes. The mechanics theme includes topics on physical quantities, vector operation, kinematics, force and Newton’s Laws, work, energy and power, momentum and collisions, rotational motion, rotational dynamics, elasticity and gravitation. Meanwhile the waves’ theme covers the mechanical waves and wave optics. This course enables students to build a strong foundation of basic concepts as well as a broader conceptual understanding of physics principles through lecture, discussion and practical experiment.

PHYSICS 2 (PHCF 0225)

This course exposes students to basic concepts and principles of physics. Upon completing this course, students will be able to analyse and solve problems related to thermal physics, electricity and magnetism. The practical experiment in this course will also enable students to apply the knowledge gained to solve practical physics related problems.

INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING (PHEF 0213)

This course will introduce the students to the engineering profession and how to prepare for an exciting engineering career. An introduction to engineering design, teamwork, and standards and codes is provided. Engineering ethics, a standard of professional behaviour that is expected from engineers will be introduced. Students will also be introduced to the basic principles and physical laws that engineering students, regardless of their area of specialization, will encounter during their undergraduate studies.
